On International Women's Day, the 8th March, Women Advancing Microfinance UK Chapter (WAM UK) presented an event with Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to support fundraising 1 Million to launch a Grameen microfinance pilot programme to fight entrenched poverty in the UK. The event was organised by WAM UK, hosted at Clifford Chance and attended by over 200 professionals. In partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), Grameen UK has dual goals: to encourage and support individuals, typically low-income or unemployed women, to become independent of welfare and find jobs or start social businesses and to ensure that Grameen UK branches are self-sustaining social businesses by offering group loans, savings, education and support.
